Dolapo Oni
Africa’s entertainment industry would never be complete without Dolapo Oni being mentioned. The British-born actress and television personality from Ijebu-Ode in Ogun state graduated from the University of Bristol in England where she studied and obtained a degree in Chemistry, she went further in her academics and received her Master’s degree from the Academy of Live and Recorded Arts in London (September, 2005) and has since become a style icon across Africa. In 2011, she was cast as the ‘Lady in Blue’ in the Nigerian adaptation of the famous Broadway stage play ‘For Colored Girls Who Have Considered Suicide When The Rainbow is Enuf’ by Ntozake Shange. Her character’s visceral account is the tale of a woman who chooses to have an abortion. Oni shared the stage with notable actresses like Joke Silva, Matilda Obaseki and Ireti Doyle, and was well received for her lead role from seasoned theatre critics. This year, she is a new addition to the cast of the hit South African TV- Series ‘Jacob’s Cross,’ where she plays ‘Moremi Omotoso’ – a woman who is passionate, liberated, strong and fights for what she believes in. The budding actress has graced the pages of various publications like ThisDay Style, Vanguard Allure, Mania, MADE Magazine, Exquisite Magazine, Mode MEN and Genevieve commandeering attention on the Red Carpet. Ms. Oni has hosted several events including the recently concluded Complete Fashion Style Awards 2012, the Pampers Product Launch and Nigeria’s most influential youth event, The Future Awards.Ofcourse, Dolapo has also experienced challenges in life when she first came out of drama school. She was unemployed for a year. She had gone for so many auditions and didn’t get any of the parts but she never lost hope and something came through eventually when she moved back from England and was looking for a job in acting. She was helping a friend to interview people on the red carpet when someone saw her and told her that Mnet was holding auditions the next day. She went for the audition and received a call a week later telling her she had the job. On her last appearance as a presenter on 53-extra, she gave Eku Eduwor (co-presenter) the full gist how she even came late for the audition. In fact, she came when the lights were about to be put off but Biola Alabi (current Managing Director of M-Net in Africa) told them she could be auditioned that day. She gave Biola Alabi a big thank you on the show. She spends her leisure watching movies, shopping, hanging out with friends and family and she really loves to sleep. Her style is effortless. She loves simple silhouettes that flatter her frame. She don’t like outfits that are too busy. Even though she is most comfortable in jeans, she loves to wear jump suits. She tries to keep in shape by working out three times a week when she is feeling motivated and when she’s not, she tries to eat healthier. We would not be seeing her face anymore on 53extra as a presenter because she has left her duties as
